How to Maintain and Clean Your Kitchen Appliances

Why regular maintenance matters

Kitchen appliances are exposed to grease, moisture, limescale and food residue every day. With a little regular care they keep their looks, work more efficiently and last considerably longer. Here are proven tips for each appliance.

Oven

  • Wipe regularly — once cool, wipe the interior with a damp cloth so grease doesn't build up and bake on.
  • Natural cleaner — a paste of baking soda and water dissolves baked-on grease well. Apply it, leave for a few hours, then wipe off.
  • Pyrolytic cleaning — if your oven has this function, run it every few months and simply wipe away the residue afterwards.
  • Door and glass — clean with a mild detergent; avoid abrasives that scratch the glass.

    • Hob

  • Induction and ceramic hobs — clean with a dedicated ceramic cleaner and a soft cloth while lukewarm. Remove spilled sugary food immediately as it can damage the surface.
  • Gas hobs — remove the grates and burners and wash them with warm water and detergent; take care not to block the burner openings.
  • Avoid wire scourers and harsh powders — they leave scratches.

    • Dishwasher

  • Clean the filter — remove and rinse the filter at the bottom at least once a month; food residue collects there and causes odours.
  • Check the spray arms — blow through or rinse the holes in the rotating arms if they're clogged.
  • Empty vinegar cycle — once a month run an empty hot program with a cup of vinegar to degrease and remove limescale.
  • Salt and rinse aid — top them up regularly; they protect against limescale and give sparkling dishes.

    • Fridge and freezer

  • Interior — wipe with a mild baking soda solution; avoid strong chemicals near food.
  • Door seals — clean with a damp cloth so they seal well; a damaged seal means lost cold air and higher consumption.
  • Defrosting — regularly defrost models without a no-frost system, as ice increases power use.
  • Condenser at the back — remove dust from the coil once a year; a clean condenser cools more efficiently.
